Getting started
5Where do I start if I want a new website?
The easiest starting point is our project enquiry form. Tell us what you need and roughly when, and we'll come back within one working day with a straight answer about how we'd approach it. No commitment - it's just a conversation.
What types of businesses do you work with?
All kinds - sole traders, small businesses, startups, charities and larger companies with specific needs. What matters more than size is that you want the job done properly. If you want quality work, honest advice and a team that sticks around after launch, we're your people. Have a look at some of our recent work.
Do I need to know exactly what I want before getting in touch?
Not at all. Some of our best projects started with "I'm not sure what I need - can we talk?" We ask the right questions, help you work out the right solution and turn rough ideas into a clear plan. Just get in touch and we'll take it from there.
How long have you been doing this?
We've been building websites since 1999 - well before most businesses had one. That's 25+ years and 200+ sites across every kind of project, platform and technology. Read our story.
Are you based in the UK?
Yes - we're a web design agency based in Yorkshire, working with clients right across the UK. You deal with us directly from start to finish, with no account managers in the way. You deal with the people actually doing the work.
Pricing & payment
11How much does a website cost?
There are two ways to pay. Pay Monthly starts from £100 a month and covers the design, build, hosting and care in one fee. Or buy it outright on one fixed quote for the build. Every project is different, so we quote it properly once we know what you need - always upfront, never hourly creep.
What is Pay Monthly and how does it work?
We design, build, host and look after your website for one monthly fee, from £100 a month, with little or nothing upfront. It's like having your own web team without the overhead of hiring one. Bigger builds may have a setup fee to keep the monthly down - if so, it's quoted upfront before anything starts.
What's included in the monthly fee?
Everything you need to run a proper website: design and build, UK hosting, SSL, backups, updates, security, and changes and support from the team that built it. No hidden extras. If you ever want something genuinely new built, like a whole new feature, we'll quote it first so there are no surprise bills.
Is there a minimum term on Pay Monthly?
No. There's no minimum term and no long contract - just give 30 days' notice when you want to leave. We'd rather keep you because the service is good, not because you're tied in.
Do I own my website?
It depends which way you pay. If you buy it outright, it's yours once it's paid for - no ongoing fees, no ties. Host it anywhere you like, or with us. Our own reusable code inside it, like PixelShop or a calculator, comes with a permanent licence for your site.
On Pay Monthly, the site is licensed to you while you're on the plan - that's how we keep the upfront cost so low. It's never sold, but your content, copy, images, data and domain name are always yours. Want to own the website itself? Choose buy it outright.
What happens if I leave Pay Monthly?
No minimum term - just give 30 days' notice. We hand over a full export of your content and data, and point your domain wherever you need it. The site itself is licensed while you're on the plan and stays ours. Want to take it with you? Talk to us first - a site built on a third-party theme, such as a WordPress theme, can go with you as it is, and anything else is by agreement. No exit fees, and we never hold anyone hostage.
What's the difference between Pay Monthly and buying outright?
Pay Monthly spreads the cost: one monthly fee covers the build plus hosting, updates and support, with no minimum term. Buying outright means one fixed quote for the build, and the site is yours outright once paid. You can then host it anywhere, or add our hosting and management monthly if you want us to keep looking after it.
Why don't you publish a full price list?
Because proper pricing depends on what you actually need. A website for a local trade is a very different job to a large online shop. A price list would either set the wrong expectations or force assumptions that aren't fair to either of us. Tell us what you need and we'll give you an accurate fixed quote - quickly.
Do you charge a deposit?
No fixed deposit. If you're buying outright, it's paid in full at launch, or in stages as set out in your quote - for larger projects, the first stage may be due when you sign. On Pay Monthly, your monthly fee starts on the 1st of the month after your website launches, plus any setup fee as set out in your quote.
How do I pay?
We invoice by email with a PDF attached, and payment is by bank transfer (details on the invoice). Pay Monthly clients pay by standing order before the 1st of each month, and still get an invoice each month for their records. Builds bought outright are invoiced as set out in your quote and agreement. We don't currently take card payments - ask us if that matters to you.
Do you charge VAT?
Not currently - PixelBay Agency isn't VAT registered, so there's no VAT added to your invoices. That's a real saving for smaller businesses and sole traders who can't reclaim it. If that ever changes, we'll tell you well in advance.
Building
9What is a custom-built website?
A custom website is designed and built from scratch around your business - no templates, no page builders, no compromises. It's fast, secure and does exactly what you need, whether that's winning enquiries, taking bookings or plugging into the systems you already use.
Why do you recommend custom PHP over WordPress?
A hand-built PHP site has no theme, no page builder and no pile of plugins to update, clash or get hacked. That makes it faster, more secure and cheaper to look after over time. WordPress is still a great fit for some projects, and we build and support WordPress too - we'll always tell you honestly which suits your job.
How long does a website build take?
It depends on the scope. A clean brochure site of 8-10 pages can be done in 3-4 weeks. A complex site with custom features, integrations or a shop can take 3-6 months. We'll give you a realistic timeline upfront - not an optimistic one we can't hit.
What do I need to provide to get started?
The more you can give us, the faster we move. Ideally your logo and brand colours, your copy, any sites you like the look of, and a clear idea of what the site needs to do. Don't worry if you're not fully prepared - we can help with content and direction. We just need enough to get going.
Do you work with my existing design or start fresh?
Both. If you have a brand you love, we'll work within it. If you want a fresh look, we'll design from scratch. The goal is a website that works brilliantly for your business - see our case studies for the range.
Do you build custom apps and tools?
Yes. Custom web applications are bespoke tools built for a specific job - client portals, booking systems, calculators, internal dashboards, stock tools, API integrations and automated reports. If it doesn't exist off the shelf, or the off-the-shelf version doesn't fit, we can build it.
We have a manual process that wastes hours every week. Can you automate it?
Very possibly. This is exactly the kind of problem we love. Tell us what the process is, who's involved, how often it runs and what the output needs to be. We'll tell you whether it can be automated and what it would take. More often than not, it pays for itself quickly.
Do you build mobile apps?
Our strength is web-based apps that run in a browser on any device - and many can be installed on your phone like an app, just like the PixelShop admin portal. That covers most business needs at a fraction of the cost of a native app. If you genuinely need a native iOS or Android app, we'll say so and point you in the right direction.
Can you integrate with our existing systems?
Usually, yes. If your system has an API - and most modern ones do - we can connect to it. We've built integrations with CRMs, accounting software, couriers, payment providers and booking systems. Not sure about yours? Send us the details and we'll find out.
WordPress & WooCommerce
3Do you build and support WordPress websites?
Yes. We build new WordPress sites, fix broken ones and look after existing ones - updates, security, speed and changes. We do it the clean way: a lean setup, only the plugins you actually need, and custom code where it beats bolting on another plugin. See WordPress & WooCommerce.
Can you help with my WooCommerce shop?
Definitely. We build, fix and support WooCommerce shops, including custom mu-plugins that add the features you need without slowing the shop down. Whether it's a checkout problem, a slow store or a feature Woo doesn't do out of the box, we can help.
Should I choose WordPress or a custom build?
If you're already on WordPress and it's working, there's often no need to move - we'll keep it fast and secure. For a new site, we usually recommend custom PHP because it's faster and lighter to maintain. For shops, PixelShop is our first choice. We'll talk it through and recommend what genuinely suits you.
Shops
6What eCommerce platforms do you build on?
Our first choice is PixelShop, our own eCommerce platform. It's custom PHP with no plugins and no theme - Stripe and Klarna payments, proper VAT invoices, delivery priced by courier and postcode zone, sales reports and an admin portal that installs as an app on your phone. You can look round the demo shop any time, or see everything on pixelshop.uk. We also build and support WooCommerce. We'll recommend what's right for your shop, not what's easiest for us.
Can I have an online shop on Pay Monthly?
Yes. PixelShop is from £150 a month on Pay Monthly, with a one-off setup fee on bigger builds or large imports, always agreed first. The shop build, hosting and ongoing care are covered in one monthly fee, and the shop is licensed to you while you're on the plan. Or buy it outright as a custom build, priced on application. See PixelShop pricing.
What payment options can my customers use?
PixelShop takes card payments through Stripe, with Klarna so customers can spread the cost. Stripe is reliable, well priced and works beautifully. Need a different gateway? Talk to us and we'll tell you straight what's possible. Every checkout is tested thoroughly before launch.
Can PixelShop handle delivery zones, click and collect and VAT?
Yes. Delivery is fully dynamic: each service is priced by postcode zone with its own rules and conditions, with a postcode checker in the admin, and where a service cannot reach a postcode it becomes a quote instead of a wrong price. Click and collect is built in, and VAT is handled properly, with VAT invoices, packing slips and credit notes as PDFs. UK Electric Fencing runs exactly this setup. Free delivery works too - Express Rugs offers it on everything except custom overseas orders.
Can you move my existing shop to PixelShop?
Yes. We move shops from WooCommerce to PixelShop, and we've migrated shops from plenty of other platforms over the years. We bring across your products and categories (plus customers and order history where possible) and set up redirects so your Google rankings carry over. Everything is tested before it goes live. ES Auto Installations saw a 400% sales increase in the first six months.
How many products can my shop handle?
A properly built shop on proper hosting handles thousands of products without breaking a sweat. Speed depends far more on how the shop is built than on how many products it has. PixelShop is lean from the start - fast search, efficient queries, no plugins - so it stays quick as you grow.
Managing & hosting
9Where are your websites hosted?
On UK servers, managed by us. Your data stays in the UK, which helps with GDPR. All hosting includes SSL, daily backups kept for 30 days, server-level security and monitoring. On Pay Monthly, hosting is included. If you've bought outright, you can host with us under our hosting and management or anywhere you like.
What does website management cover?
Everything that keeps your site fast, safe and working: UK hosting, SSL, daily backups, software and security updates, monitoring, and a real developer when you need a change made. It's included in Pay Monthly, and available monthly for sites you've bought outright - including sites we didn't build, once we've checked them over.
Can I use my own domain?
Absolutely - and we'd encourage it. Your domain is a valuable business asset and should be registered in your name, at a registrar you control. We'll point it at the hosting when the site is ready. Don't have one yet? We'll help you choose and register one - in your name, not ours.
How reliable is your hosting?
Our hosting targets 99.9% uptime. Planned maintenance is done outside business hours and flagged in advance. Unplanned problems are rare, and when they happen we're on it quickly - and we usually know before you do.
Are backups included?
Yes. Every site on our hosting has automated daily backups, kept for 30 days. It seems unnecessary right up until the day you desperately need it - and we've restored sites from backup more times than we can count.
Can I host my site myself?
If you've bought it outright, yes - it's yours to host wherever you like, and we'll package and document everything properly. Just bear in mind self-hosting means updates, security, backups and speed are down to you. If that sounds like hassle, our managed hosting takes it off your plate.
What happens after my website launches?
On Pay Monthly, we simply keep looking after it - that's what the fee covers. If you bought outright, you choose: manage it yourself, add our management monthly, or come back to us whenever you need changes. No pressure either way.
How quickly do you respond to support requests?
For Pay Monthly and management clients: emergencies like a site down or a security problem, we aim to respond within the hour during business hours. Urgent fixes are same day during business hours, and content changes within one working day. Full details are on our client support page.
Do you offer training?
Yes. If you want to manage some content yourself, we'll show you how, with simple guides and a walkthrough, and we're always on hand for questions. Our admin portals include in-built help guides too. You should feel in control of your website, not dependent on us for every small change.
Site rescue
5What is site rescue and when do I need it?
Site rescue is for websites in trouble - hacked, broken after an update, running on outdated tech, abandoned by a previous developer, or just painfully slow. We step in, assess the damage and fix it properly. We specialise in taking over messy situations.
My site has been hacked - can you help?
Yes, and quickly. The longer a hacked site stays compromised, the more it hurts your Google rankings, your reputation and your visitors. We clean the infection, close the hole it came through, restore from backup if needed and put measures in place so it doesn't happen again. WhatsApp us and we'll prioritise you.
My previous developer has gone silent. Can you take over?
Sadly this is one of the most common situations we see - and yes, we can take over. Even if nothing was handed over properly or documented, or it was built in a questionable way. We'll tell you honestly what can be saved, what needs rebuilding, and get things moving again.
How quickly can you respond to a site emergency?
For genuine emergencies - site down, hacked, all access lost - we aim to respond within the hour during business hours. Existing clients get this as part of their plan. If you're new and in a crisis, WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach us.
What do you need from me to start a rescue?
As much as you have: hosting login, website admin access, domain registrar access and any notes from the previous developer. More access means faster progress. Lost access to some of it? That's fine - recovering access is often part of the job.
Our apps
7What is PixelCRM?
PixelCRM is our CRM for small businesses. Enquiries, clients, bookings, quotes and invoices all in one place, built around how small businesses actually work. Business CRM is from £75 a month and Venue CRM from £125 a month, all in, or a Custom CRM is quoted. Find out more at pixelcrm.uk.
What is PixelShop?
PixelShop is our own eCommerce platform, written in custom PHP. It powers shops like ES Auto Installations, Express Rugs and UK Electric Fencing, with Stripe and Klarna, postcode-zone delivery, VAT invoices, sales reports and an admin app for your phone. It's the platform we build client shops on - see online shops.
What is PixelSEO?
PixelSEO is our AI readiness and SEO monitoring tool. It checks your website against modern search requirements and the signals AI-powered search uses to find businesses. There's a free web scanner, plus Pro versions for PHP sites and WordPress with automated alerts.
What is PixelBot?
PixelBot is our AI chat assistant for websites. It's trained on your own site content, so it answers visitor questions about your services, process and FAQs accurately, day or night - and cuts down the basic enquiries you handle by hand. You can try it on this site, bottom right.
What is PixelKit?
PixelKit is our free suite of 76+ web tools that run entirely in your browser. No accounts, no data collection, no tracking. Image converters, code formatters, password generators, colour tools and plenty more.
What is PixelZip?
PixelZip is our free bulk file tool for developers and agencies. Compress, convert and rename images in batches without uploading them anywhere - it all runs on your own device for privacy.
Are your apps free?
PixelKit and PixelZip are completely free. PixelSEO has a free scanner, with Pro versions for deeper monitoring. PixelBot and PixelCRM are paid licences, quoted upfront. PixelShop is the platform we build client shops on, from £150 a month or bought outright - see pixelshop.uk. The free tools are genuinely useful, not crippled demos. See all our apps.
Working with us
7Can I phone you?
We don't have a public phone line - we work by email and WhatsApp. It means nothing gets lost, everything's in writing, and you get a proper answer rather than a rushed one. Once you're a client, you'll have direct WhatsApp access to the people building and looking after your site.
How do we communicate during a project?
By email and WhatsApp, plus a video call when it helps. We won't force you onto a project tool you've never used. What we do ask for is clear communication both ways, because vague feedback costs everyone time.
How many revisions do I get?
We don't count revisions - that just creates an awkward back and forth. We work in stages with proper feedback rounds built in, so things get caught early. Clear, consolidated feedback gets actioned. If the brief changes significantly, that's a conversation about scope, quoted before anything changes.
What slows projects down?
Honestly? Usually content. The biggest cause of delays is waiting for copy, images, product details or sign-off. Get those to us quickly and projects move fast. We'll give you a clear list of what we need at the start, so there are no surprises.
Will I work directly with the developer?
Yes. You work directly with the people doing the work - not an account manager reading someone else's notes. The person you brief is the person building your site, and the same people look after it afterwards. Nothing gets lost in translation.
Do you sign NDAs?
Yes, we're happy to sign a reasonable NDA. We treat all client work as confidential by default anyway, and never share project details publicly without your permission. Just mention it at the start.
Can you support a site someone else built?
Often, yes - but we check it over first. We'll review how it's built and tell you whether we can take it on and what that involves. Some sites are fine to support as they are; others need work first. We'll always tell you the truth. See site rescue.
Still got questions?
WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach us, or drop us a message. Either way, you'll get a straight reply from real people within one working day.
